Stuart L Stanton, MD OBGYN FPMRS UK

Dr. Stuart Stanton received his MBBS degree in 1961 from the University of London, UK. He later worked as a clinical assistant at St Paul’s (Urological) Hospital and then as an obstetrics and gynecology registrar at the Middlesex Hospital (London). He then worked for a year as a research registrar at the Institute of Urology in London.

Dr. Stanton became a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist in May 1974 when he established the Urogynecological Department at St George’s Hospital and carried out his clinical work, research and teaching until he retired from the NHS in 2003.

In 1980, he was a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and supported the development of urogynecology as a subspecialty in the United Kingdom. He was the first consultant to have a subspecialist trainee in urogynecology and the first to establish a combined urogynecological and colorectal clinic with a colorectal surgeon at St George’s Hospital. He was a foundingmember of the Research Urogynecological Society, which later became incorporated within the British Society of Urogynecology, and was appointed President in 2003.  He was also a founder member of the International Continence Society (ICS) in 1971 and International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) in 1975.

Dr.Stanton supervised ten urogynecological theses, was awarded ten visiting professorships, had 285 invited presentations, and wrote 47 chapters in text books. He has co-edited 13 books on urogynecology and published 238 papers.  He trained medical students, junior doctors, and nurses at St George’s Hospital, in addition to 86 sub-specialist trainees and research fellows, many of whom continue to specialize in urogynecology today.  He has spoken at various local public meetings about urogynecological conditionsand their management, always stressing the importance of combining medical, psychiatric,physiotherapy and surgical treatments.
